Speech and Language Therapy

What should I expect from a therapy program?  Building a program to work on speech and language skills can look different from family to family.  I bring a particular skill set to the table, but so much depends on the needs and desires of the family and child.  At the least, an initial evaluation of the child's current communication skill levels will be conducted, goals and objectives will be developed based on the evaluation outcomes, and frequency of treatment will be discussed.

Sessions typically run for 1 hour once/week but more or less may be reccommended depending on the needs of the family and child.  The last 15 minutes of the session are used for reviewing carryover (homework) and for any paperwork that needs to be completed.

At least one parent or caregiver must be present at the session.  Every four months (or sooner if the family wishes), goals and objectives will be reviewed and revised if necessary.   This is very important in order to gauge progress and to make decisions regarding continuing or stopping treatment, as well as just checking in to make sure the current plan is working well for the child and family.

I may bring certain toys or therapy materials to a session, but I primarily like to look for opportunities that incorporate therapy using the toys and activities in your home...this allows for a more seamless transition of speech-language practice throughout the week.  It is so important for these little ones to have many opportunities throughout the week to practice what they learn during their sessions!
